The Box Office was back in a big way in 2024. Have we fully recovered from the pandemic-stricken box office nightmare of 2020 and 2021?
I have no idea.
But this has got to be a good sign that maybe we have! Don't get me wrong, I love streamers. But there's something to be said for going to a theater with a bunch of strangers and enjoying a laugh or a cry or a scream.
This year, many returned to theaters because if you Sequel it, they will come! Out of the top 10 highest grossing movies of 2024, 9 of them were sequels.
Someone once said "People don't know what they like. They like what they know." Which is a good way to look at this years top 10 movies.
Sequels exist not only because movie goers (mostly) want to know more about the characters and other elements from movies they enjoyed. Usually there are a lot of people feeling that way because the movies that get sequels are hit movies and blockbusters. They don't really make sequels to flops. So ever since their invention, sequels have been almost undeniable. This year they came back with a triumphant 9 out of 10 of the year's top moneymakers.
