Oklahoma is facing a real estate roller coaster, but not the fun kind with thrilling drops and exhilarating curves. Nope, it’s the kind that leaves renters dizzy and desperate. A staggering quarter of Oklahoma’s renters are classified as extremely low-income, meaning they’re earning less than 30% of the area’s median income—roughly $30,000 for a household of four. With only 38 affordable homes available for every 100 eligible renters, those searching for a place to hang their hats are likely feeling like they’re on a wild goose chase.

 

Adding to the housing headache, lawmakers seem to be moving at the speed of molasses when it comes to finding real solutions. While cities like Oklahoma City and Tulsa are trying to tackle rising eviction rates, legislative efforts like House Bill 1051 have stalled out without even making it out of committee. It makes you wonder if “affordable housing” is just a pipe dream, doesn’t it? To top it off, many of those extremely low-income renters are some of the most vulnerable populations—working hard, yet still barely making ends meet.
