Laura Dern Pays Emotional Tribute to Sam Neill Following Jurassic Park Costar's Death at 78

The Jurassic Park family lost one of its most beloved members on Monday, July 13, when actor Sam Neill passed away at age 78 in Sydney, Australia. His death came suddenly and unexpectedly, though his family shared that he remained cancer-free at the time of his passing—a detail that underscores the unpredictability of loss and the fragility we all face.

On the same day his family announced his death, Laura Dern, his costar across three decades of the Jurassic franchise, released a statement that captured what made Neill so special to those who knew him. “Sam was my beloved lifetime friend,” Dern, 59, wrote, describing how he showed her “the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love always with the driest of wit.” She ended by calling him “a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man.”

Those words carry weight. Dern and Neill shared the screen in 1993’s Jurassic Park, where she played Ellie Sattler opposite his Dr. Alan Grant. They reunited for Jurassic Park III in 2001 and again for Jurassic World Dominion in 2022—a partnership that spanned nearly three decades. That kind of longevity in Hollywood is rare, and the affection in Dern’s tribute suggests their connection transcended the typical costar relationship.

Neill had been public about his health struggles since revealing in his 2023 memoir that he was diagnosed with stage III angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. After chemotherapy failed, he was placed on an anti-cancer drug and managed to reach remission, though doctors warned him the medication would eventually stop working. In an October 2023 interview with Australian Story, Neill displayed the philosophical resilience that seemed to define him: “I know I’ve got it, but I’m not really interested in it. It’s out of my control. If you can’t control it, don’t get into it.”

Beyond Jurassic Park, a new generation discovered Neill as Chief Inspector Chester Campbell in the first two seasons of Peaky Blinders, where his portrayal of a villain who was simultaneously despicable and charismatic left a lasting impression. The show’s creators shared their own grief on Monday, calling him “one of the key forces that got Peaky Blinders off to a running start.”

Sam Neill leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances, but perhaps more importantly, he leaves behind the kind of genuine human connections that transcend the entertainment industry—people like Laura Dern who will remember not just the actor, but the man with the driest wit and the deepest loyalty.
