Sandra Oh Reveals Why She Really Left Grey's Anatomy — and the Wild Audition Story That Came Before It

Sandra Oh is giving fans a rare, behind-the-scenes look at her decision to leave Grey’s Anatomy after 10 unforgettable seasons. On Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast, she opened up about the moment she knew it was time to say goodbye to Cristina Yang. “I felt very much like I did my job. I really did my job,” she said. The actress explained that she felt she had fully developed the character and trusted her gut when Shonda Rhimes gave her the chance to choose during renegotiations.

But the revelations didn’t stop there. Oh shared that she originally auditioned for the role of Miranda Bailey, and that her manager actually told her to walk out of a network audition because it wasn’t going well. It almost ended before it began. But the show’s creators saw her work in a session and cast her as Cristina anyway. Talk about a twist ending.

Grey’s Anatomy remains one of the biggest shows on television, and Oh’s candid comments offer fans a fresh perspective on one of its most iconic character exits. She credits the writers with giving Cristina a proper send-off, something fans still celebrate today. What’s your favorite Cristina Yang moment? Drop it in the comments.
