Birdwatching takes flight with Gen Z in Britain

Birdwatching has officially shed its old-school reputation. New data from the RSPB shows that nearly 750,000 people aged 16 to 29 in the UK now birdwatch regularly. That’s a stunning 1,088% increase since 2018, making it the second-fastest-growing hobby for young adults, just behind jewellery making. Overall, more than four million people in the UK are now birding, a 47% rise in just six years.

So what’s behind the shift? Accessibility is a huge factor. Apps like Merlin and iNaturalist allow beginners to identify species with just their smartphone, no binoculars required. The RSPB also offers free entry to their reserves for anyone aged 16 to 24, removing the cost barrier entirely. But beyond the tech, young birders say it’s about connection. Connection to nature, yes, but also to other people. One 23-year-old birdwatcher told the RSPB he’s made loads of friends through the hobby, proving it’s a surprisingly social activity that supports mental wellness.

Whether you’re looking for a cheap day out, a way to reduce screen time, or just want to try something different this summer, birdwatching is an easy win. You don’t need fancy gear, you just need to step outside. So, are you ready to give birdwatching a try, or have you already spotted something cool in your area? Let us know!
