Selena Gomez is opening up about the pressure to stay frozen in time, and she’s not here for it. In a new People cover story, the singer and Rare Beauty founder addressed fans who keep asking her to bring back her iconic 2016 smoky eye. “I think people want to freeze me in time to that period of my life,” she said. “That’s just not going to happen.” And honestly, she has a point.

 

That 2016 era was massive for Selena. Revival had just topped the Billboard 200, she was the most-followed person on Instagram at just 23, and her beauty look was everywhere. But Selena says that time wasn’t as picture-perfect as it seemed. She called it a hectic period where she was just trying to be cool and figure things out. Now, she’s in a completely different chapter.

These days, Selena is married to producer Benny Blanco, running Rare Beauty, and focused on what makes her happy. She told People she’s still in the honeymoon stage and said, “It just feels so wonderful to have a partner that genuinely listens and meets you right where you are.” So while fans might miss the smoky eye, Selena’s clearly loving who she is right now.
