Ariana Grande Shares Studio Footage From the Day "Petal" Was Born:

Ariana Grande gave fans a rare glimpse inside the creative process this week, posting studio footage from the session where her song “Petal” came together. In the clip, Grande can be seen testing vocal melodies over the instrumental while producers Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh work behind the boards. At one point, Martin reacts with a simple but perfect “Sick!” as Grande refines her notes.

The session turned out to be the birth of something huge. “Petal” became the title track of Grande’s eighth album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in August. The album also produced the Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” making this one of the most successful eras of her career. Grande captioned the video simply “the day petal was born,” and fans have been flooding the comments ever since.

Beyond the music, Grande has had a busy year. Her Eternal Sunshine Tour wrapped in September, and she’s releasing a live album from the trek. She’s also preparing for press around Focker-in-Law, her upcoming film project. But for now, this studio footage is the moment fans can’t stop talking about.
