Adam Levine has played arenas and stadiums for two decades, but even he isn’t immune to a mortifying moment in front of a legend. During Monday’s Battle round rehearsal on The Voice, Levine told contestants Amanda Mikkel and Julia Clark about the time he sang “Surfer Girl” at a piano in front of Brian Wilson himself. The Beach Boys co-founder stared at Levine throughout the performance and said nothing afterward. As Levine put it, “If you want to know what uncomfortable is? That was uncomfortable.”

 

Guest mentor Alex Warren helped reassure the singers that awkward stage moments happen to everyone. It clearly worked, because Mikkel and Clark both delivered praised takes on Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” In the end, Levine chose Mikkel to advance to Cut Week and noted that managing nerves will be a priority for her going forward.

The moment works because it’s a reminder that stars get starstruck too. A famous coach, a legendary idol, and one deeply silent room make for a story that anyone who’s ever met their hero can feel in their bones.
