Is Social Media Actually Dead? Why Everyone's Quiet Quitting Their Apps

There was a time when opening Facebook meant seeing what your friends were actually up to. Chronological feeds, dumb status updates, BuzzFeed quizzes that told you which pizza topping matched your personality. It was messy and fun and genuinely social. According to a new piece from Elizabeth Nolan Brown at Reason, that version of social media is effectively gone. What replaced it? Algorithmic feeds full of strangers, influencers treating every post like a brand launch, and short-form video that makes every app feel like a TV channel you never signed up for.

The shift didn’t happen overnight. Platforms chased engagement, and engagement meant showing you content from people you don’t know. TikTok proved the model worked, so Instagram and Facebook copied it. Suddenly your feed wasn’t about connection. It was about consumption. Commentators like Ben Smith compare social platforms to bars that lose their crowd, and Katherine Dee says the feeling of being online together is over. When your friends stop showing up, there’s not much reason to keep going back.

So what now? Maybe this is less about loss and more about honesty. People aren’t mourning social media. They’re relieved to have a reason to leave. The question is whether anything replaces it, or whether we’re all just quietly logging off for good. What was the moment social media stopped being fun for you? Drop it in the comments, we actually read them.

The TJ Show Podcast

Listen to the TJ Show weekdays from 6am to 10am right here on Magic 95. Click the link below to catch up on any audio you might've missed and scroll down to meet everyone on the show.

TJ was the kid who walked to school with his headphones plugged into his radio. Having discovered morning talk shows as a 13 year old while growing up in Hillsdale, NJ, he became hooked. In high school, he started working in radio as a volunteer.  He held many positions at his first official radio job including answering phones, producing, and eventually becoming a co-host on Elvis Duran’s nationally syndicated radio show.  TJ began hosting his own morning radio show (The TJ Show) in Boston in early 2013.  TJ is married to his wife, Jess.  They have 3 girls and a Labrador retriever named Luna.

JBo was given her nickname by a guy in college (who   she now realizes was flirting with her) when he said,   “I’mma call you JBo because you’re fly like   JLo”. JBo claims JLo as a play cousin so the comment   wasn’t too far-fetched. She was born in Puerto Rico and   raised in the City Beautiful (Orlando, FL). She’s a military spouse and the hardest part of her marriage is finding places to keep her kicks (She’s an avid sneaker collector). Leaving enough closet space for her husband is an ongoing challenge.

Kenny is The TJ Show’s audio producer.  He has been referred to as “chronically single.” Most recently, he had a crush on his dentist, but had trouble expressing his feelings with her fingers in his mouth. Kenny thinks being on a national radio show might help him find someone that loves him.  Kenny has bowled two 300-games and one 800-series (both USBC Sanctioned).  After years of heartbreak, Kenny is still a die-hard New York Jets fan.

What Heather lacks in hydration she makes up   for in sarcasm. No, but seriously, she really   should drink more water. On any given day you   can find her reading a memoir by a female   comedian, listening to a podcast hosted by a   female comedian, or watching a movie starring   a female comedian. Heather runs on Coke Zero   and good vibes.

Josh is a former elementary school teacher who traded in his chalkboard for a video camera! He has been developing his love for video since he was 8 years old. He entered and won his first video competition at 12 and never looked back. For the last 3 years, Josh has been busy producing almost every type of film possible. From wedding videos to TV commercials, he has done it all! He is the one responsible for making sure The TJ Show looks as good as it sounds. When he’s not filming this star-studded cast, he’s spending time with his amazing wife, daughter, and rambunctious dog Brady.

Zach Bryan Breaks Gillette Stadium Record Wearing 'Free Palestine' Shirt Again

Zach Bryan just made Gillette Stadium history, and he did it in a T-shirt that’s now the center of the conversation. Saturday night’s Foxborough show drew 73,538 fans, the largest crowd the venue has ever hosted. For the second consecutive night, Bryan performed in a “Free Palestine” shirt.

Gillette celebrated the record on Instagram, but commenters quickly pointed out that the post’s photos never showed a close-up of Bryan’s shirt or his face. The timing is hard to miss. Earlier this year, Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour over pro-Palestine speeches, which Macklemore attributed to stadium owner Robert Kraft rallying venue owners against him. Kraft cited antisemitic rhetoric, while Sheeran described the situation as a debate over free speech.

With Bryan now headlining the same stadium in front of a record crowd, the message and the venue’s response are both under a microscope. One viral comment under the post said it plainly: “It’s 2026. Being apolitical during a genocide doesn’t work anymore.” Where do you land on artists bringing politics to the stage? Sound off in the comments.

Benson Boone Just Revealed His Most Embarrassing Tour Moment, and It Involved a Fan and a Urinal

Benson Boone has done backflips off pianos, played arenas, and watched his 2025 album American Heart debut at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. But his most unforgettable tour moment? A backstage bathroom incident that he still can’t shake. On the Life Uncut podcast with Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne, Boone shared the story of opening night on his Fireworks & Rollerblades World Tour about two and a half years ago, when a fan walked in on him mid-bathroom break.

Here’s the detail that makes it so good. Boone was at a urinal with his pants fully off, a joke he shares with his childhood friends. What he didn’t know was that the backstage bathroom was shared with the audience. A fan walked straight in. According to Boone, she was completely cool about it and they had a nice interaction afterward, but he still described the moment as awkward and horrifying.

It’s the kind of story that makes a chart-topping star feel like a regular person. Boone has since moved up to arena tours, but this one moment from his early touring days is apparently never leaving his memory.

Server Reportedly Told a Customer to Eat Fast Food Over a 5% Tip, and TikTok Cannot Stop Arguing

A TikTok from @captain.t.roll is putting tipping culture back under the microscope after the creator shared a receipt with a handwritten note from a server. The note, allegedly left after an $11 tip on a $220 bill, told the customer to eat fast food if that’s all he could afford and to stop wasting the server’s time, adding “This is our JOB!” The clip has pulled in over 1.2 million views and around 32,000 likes, and the comment section is a full-blown battlefield.

The customer’s side of the story: he says he dined with two friends, everyone ordered appetizers, entrees, and dessert, and the $240.35 total was split three ways, making the 5% tip feel fair for his share. Whether the handwritten note is real or a staged skit remains unclear, which, honestly, has not slowed the internet down even a little.

Some viewers are firmly on the server’s side, saying 5% is an insult in a job that depends on gratuity. Others argue tipping should be based on service, not a mandatory percentage, and that no customer deserves a scolding with their receipt. Either way, the debate is reignited, and it’s not cooling down anytime soon.

Where do you land: should tipping be a fixed percentage, or should it always come down to the service you got? Sound off in the comments.

Seed Bombs Help Los Angeles Fire Survivors Heal and Regrow

When Dana Goodyear and her son Ramsey lost their Pacific Palisades home in the January 2025 wildfires, they decided to do something unexpected. Instead of only grieving what burned, they started making seed bombs. Little balls of native seeds, compost, and clay about the size of a donut hole. You throw them into the dirt, the clay shields the seeds, and eventually native flowers push through the ash. What started as a healing project for one family has turned into a community movement. The Seed Bomb Project has now distributed 10,000 seed bombs to fire survivors across Altadena, the Palisades, and Malibu. Each one costs around five dollars, and the project is now part of the nonprofit Creative Visions, with schools and local businesses getting involved. Meanwhile, Altadena fire survivor Renée Amy is leading a parallel effort to sow 130 million California poppy seeds in burn areas. The seed mix was created by the Theodore Payne Foundation, a nonprofit native plant nursery, so these aren’t random flowers. They’re native species that can help restore fire-scarred landscapes and build long-term resilience. Dana said she wanted to channel her “pretty extreme disorientation and grief into something meaningful.” And the flowers, as she puts it, are “such a perfect symbol of resilience.” It’s not a solution to wildfire risk, but it’s proof that community, hope, and healing can be planted. What would you want to grow if you were starting over?
